Travel launches AR bag measurement tool

SINGAPORE: The world’s leading travel search engine Kayak ( has leveraged on augmented reality (AR) and introduced its patent pending bag measurement.

As each airline has different carry-on luggage dimensions, Kayak’s AR bag measurement tool aims to help travellers to recognise whether or not their luggage will fit in the overhead compartment before arriving at the airport.

Matthias Keller, Chief Scientist & Senior Vice President of Technology, Kayak, said: “One of the bothering moments in travel is when you have to worry if the flight attendant will allow your hand carry on board the plane. And now we’ve got a tool that can help. Apart from the other AR applications that are fun, this specific tool was designed to help travellers.”

To measure their carry-on luggage, users need to first open the Kayak app, go to flight search section and click “new bag measurement tool”. Users will then be guided to scan the floor (which helps calibrate measurements) and then to move the camera around the luggage to capture its size.

From there, Kayak will display the measurement and alert you with the bag’s exact measurements (length, width and height), so that users can identify whether they can take it on a flight as a carry-on or if it needs to be checked in.

The tool compares baggage-fee policies for all Kayak-tracked airlines in one place. That way, you know your bag will fit no matter which airline you’re flying.

The tool is currently available in the Kayak app for all iOS devices running iOS 11.3 and up. Demo video:

Kayak’s tech team invented this bag measurement tool during their week-long engineering competition, full of designs and development. Kayak will continuously invest in innovative technologies – including AR, VR, AI and voice technology – to help users plan and manage their travel easily.

Kayak helps millions of travellers around the globe make confident travel decisions. As the world’s leading travel search engine, Kayak searches other sites to show travellers the information they need to find the right flights, hotels, rental cars and vacation packages.

Kayak is an independently-managed subsidiary of Booking Holdings.
