No Mean Feat: Virtual cycling challenge

With a record breaking 3,000 cyclists registered and more set to roll in, the 55th National Day Cycling Challenge 2020 is set to be Singapore’s only virtual cycling challenge.

Designed to bring cyclists together and celebrate 55 years of riding together as a nation, TOGOPARTS.COM is organising the challenge to promote sportsallow social connections through cycling.

Building on this year’s National Day theme “Stronger, Together” and the #SGUnited theme, “TOGOSG55” challenge will take place from 1 August midnight to 30 August 11.59pm. Registration closes on 15 August at 11.59pm.

Designed as an interactive platform, TOGOPARTS.COM has in place challenges along the journey for the participants to unlock and get rewarded. Every ride recorded by a participant will contribute to the total distance accumulated for this challenge.

The aim is to record 550,000 km at the end of the challenge. The total distance clocked so far is 180,865 km  in just one week of the challenge.

“It has been a good ride so far! We beat our own target of achieving 1,500 participants for the challenge. We have now more than 3,000 participants and it is heartening to see the cycling enthusiasts and community rallying together for the Challenge,” said Mr Evan Lee, CEO of Togoparts.com. “And with 28 National Cycling Team Members onboard to inspire the rest, we hope to achieve the 5550,000km ultimate goal at the end of the challenge in celebration of Singapore’s 55th birthday.”

So, whether you are a competitive or leisure cyclist, participating as a team or individual, cycling indoors or outdoors, there is simply something for everyone to get excited about this challenge.

There are 17 achievements to unlock along the way to inspire and motivate the participants. One of the achievements – NATION BUILDER – was unlocked by 580 cyclists who made up 55,000km in less than two days.

Mr Allan Yeo, 58, was one of the first to complete 550km in under three days and is currently ranked NO.1 on the leader board.

“The experience had been wonderful and I have set my mind to complete 550 km within 55 hours,” said Mr Yeo. “It will be my National Day wish for Singapore.

“Age is just a number and you never know what you can achieve. And my advice to my fellow cycling friends is to keep on cycling whenever you can. Cycling has changed me physically and mentally.

Darren Lim Yu, 22, a National Team rider, clocked one of the longest rides – 204.5 km in 8hr 19min.

“Long rides are very easy in the first few kilometres, maybe up till about 100km,” he said. “The longer the ride, the harder it feels.

“What keeps me going on the long rides are the friends around me and the aim to accomplish 200km before the end of the ride. It wasn’t easy but the satisfaction of achieving it ultimately makes me want to do it over and again”
